Throughout the SED course, Grace told us many stories of her experiences with developmentally disabled children. Although she worked in various places, I do not think that I could work with the low functioning group. I do think that I have patients, enough to work with children; I just do not think that my purpose was to work with low functioning children. However, I do realize that I will have many learning disabilities throughout my classroom. I also know that everyone learns on a different level and at a different pace. With this I will incorporate many ways of learning into my curriculum along with all of the other things that I have realized that needs to be in my lesson plans. Learning about the Maine Learning Results was very helpful, knowing that I will have to incorporate this into my curriculum when I become a teacher.

I think the most interesting part of the course was when we had the panel with the three teachers. Two of them were first year teachers and another woman had been teacher for over 40 years. Originally I wanted to teach a kindergarten class, but after hearing the panel discussion I’ve been thinking about teaching a high grade level. Maybe middle school, but I haven’t exactly thought it through yet. Maybe I will decide to do my practicum in a middle school.

diversity

Diversity is something very important in our society today. Diversity consists of different people coming together to be able to learn and work in the same environment. The different forms of diversity consist of culture, race, religion, socio economic status, gender, interests, sexual orientation, learning styles, disabilities, languages, and even their strengths and weakness. In the past people with these differences were not able to feel like they worked or learned in a safe environment. I think that our society today has changed since then. There is some people that don't believe that things should be diverse, but in today's society everyone has so many differences from each other and i believe that we should be able to except these differences as part of them, and not judge the person by their ability or inability. In the movie "Freedom Writers", the teacher was able to get her students to look pass each others differences and they all felt like it was the safest environment that they have ever been in. They like this so much that they all fought for the teacher to be able to be their teacher for the following years of their high school career. They learned how to work together to get what they wanted. I want the children in my classroom to be able to work together no matter their differences, and i want them to be able to feel like they are safe in my classroom.
